What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is your wireless connection to the World Wide Web. Using your Wi-Fi-enabled laptop, PDA, or other wireless device, you can connect to the Internet, your e-mail, and even your corporate network with ease from any Xiocom Wireless HotZone. You can enjoy the same simple and fast connections no matter where you’re Xiocom Wireless HotZone location is located. What is a Xiocom Wireless HotZone? Xiocom Wireless HotZone is an area covered by our wireless signal. HotZones provide Wi-Fi wireless broadband Internet service in locations such as resorts, hotels and apartments. Using either a laptop or handheld that is Wi-Fi 802.11b wirelessly-enabled, you can access the Internet or your corporate intranet at speeds up to 50 times faster than dial-up.

What do I need to access the service?

You will need three things to begin using a Xiocom Wireless HotZone. First you will need a laptop or handheld with Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless capability. Your existing device may already have this capability built-in. If not, you can purchase a Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless networking card for most laptops and many handhelds from select retail locations, major electronics retailers or direct from the manufacturer. Second, When your device is wireless-enabled, you will need to “View available networks” and set your SSID (or network identifier) to 'Xiocom'. Typically this is done by clicking on it and selecting connect. Refer to your wireless network card documentation for specific instructions on how to make this change. Lastly, you will need a standard Internet-ready browser on any operating system. No additional software is required.

Where can I purchase a wireless ethernet card?

You can purchase a Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless networking card for most laptops and many handhelds from select wireless retail locations, major electronics retailers or direct from the manufacturer.

How does the service work?

Xiocom Wireless installs access points throughout each service location, which transmit a radio signal wirelessly to a user's Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless network card. With a properly installed wireless network card, a customer launches their browser from within a Xiocom Wireless service location and receives a login page to enter their user name and password. Once their account information is verified, they are able to connect to Internet resources. With full connectivity to the Internet, customers can access any Internet resources, as well as any corporate networks to which they have access from the Internet.

Can I access my corporate network using Xiocom Wireless HotZone?

If your employer has provided you with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall, you can seamlessly access your corporate network. Xiocom Wireless strongly recommends that its customers take measures to ensure the security of their wireless connections, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), encryption and firewalls. As with any wireless communication, the Xiocom Wireless HotZone service is not inherently secure and you should ensure you have adequate security safeguards in place.

How do I secure my connection to the Internet through Xiocom Wireless HotZone?

Xiocom Wireless strongly recommends that its customers take additional measures such as virtual private networks (VPNs), encryption and personal firewalls. As with any high-speed wireless service, the Xiocom Wireless HotZone network is not inherently secure. Furthermore, wireless communications can be intercepted by equipment and software designed for that purpose. Notwithstanding our efforts to enhance security with respect to the service, we cannot guarantee the effectiveness of these efforts and will not be liable to you or any other party for any lack of security that may result from your use of the service or your device. You are responsible for taking such precautions and providing such security measures best suited for your situation and intended use of the service.

Do you offer dial-up services?

Our goal is to provide premier wireless broadband Internet access in public locations. Xiocom Wireless does not offer a dial-up alternative.

How do I become a Xiocom Wireless HotZone subscriber?

You can sign up online today or if your laptop or handheld is already Wi-Fi 802.11b enabled, you can also sign up by launching your browser and selecting "sign up" from the menu options.

Usage

I am at a Xiocom Wireless service location. How do I log-in to my account?

If you are in a Xiocom Wireless service location and your Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless network card is properly installed, launch your browser. You will be presented with the Xiocom Wireless HotZone log-in page. Once there, you should enter your user name and password. Once your account information is validated, you will be connected to the Internet.

What operating systems are currently compatible with the service?

Xiocom Wireless HotZone is not OS-specific, and will work with any operating systems as long as there is a compatible, Internet-ready browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

How do I install the software drivers for my wireless network card?

Software drivers differ depending on the specific wireless network card you purchase. Refer to the documentation that came with your wireless network card for specific instructions.

How do I know if my wireless network card is supported by Xiocom Wireless?

Xiocom Wireless HotZone is a Wi-Fi 802.11b network; therefore, any Wi-Fi certified wireless network card will work. Look for the Wi-Fi certification on the wireless network card before purchasing it.

Does Xiocom Wireless provide me with an e-mail account?

Xiocom Wireless does not provide e-mail accounts for its users.

Can I access my personal e-mail account through my Xiocom Wireless HotZone account?

You can access any web-based e-mail account such as Yahoo.com or Hotmail.com. You can also access corporate e-mail accounts if your employer provides you with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall. Xiocom Wireless strongly recommends that its customers take measures to ensure the security of their wireless connections, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), encryption and firewalls. As with any wireless communication, the Xiocom Wireless HotZone service is not inherently secure and you should ensure you have adequate security safeguards in place.

Can I connect using a Macintosh computer?

Yes, Xiocom Wireless supports Macintosh users. Macs with AirPort cards installed usually require little or no configuration. You will need to set your AirPort card to select the Xiocom Wireless HotZone network. See the AirPort card documentation for specific instructions.

Can I connect using a Palm handheld device?

Yes, Palm handhelds that support Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless technology and utilize a standard Internet-ready browser, for example Palm’s Tungsten C device, are compatible with the Xiocom Wireless HotZone network.

What if I have problems accessing my VPN or Corporate Intranet?

If you are experiencing any problems accessing your corporate network using a virtual private network (VPN), please call your network administrator.

Where can I use the Xiocom Wireless HotZone service?

Xiocom Wireless HotZone is available in many convenient locations across the U.S. and Internationally including resorts, hotels and apartments.

Can I use the Xiocom Wireless HotZone service outside or inside my home?

Yes, if you are in our service coverage area you can use the service both outside and inside your home. The Xiocom Wireless HotZone network is LAN-based, not cellular; therefore the service is intended to be used from within specific physical locations. In some cases, coverage will spill out into a small area surrounding a service location, but that is not by design. Although the Xiocom Wireless HotZone service would not be available, the Wi-Fi 802.11b technology is not proprietary, and equipment can be purchased to establish a home Wi-Fi wireless network. The same wireless networking card could be used on both a private Wi-Fi network and Xiocom Wireless's public Wi-Fi network.

When will service be available in my area?

Xiocom Wireless HotZone is continually building new locations. Our goal is to make the service available where you want to access the Internet while away from your home or office. Check back here often as we continue to expand our network.

Is it easy to set up my own Xiocom Wireless service?

Yes! Once you connect to the Xiocom Wireless network, you will receive our welcome page. Simply choose the rate plan that best suits your needs and you’ll be on-line in just minutes! There’s no software to download and no technician to wait for when using Xiocom Wireless’ HotZone service.

How will I be charged for service?

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover).

Will my credit card be automatically billed each month upon sign up?

No, we do not auto-renew your credit/debit card. We offer various pre-paid service plans including daily, weekly, monthly and annual service.

Service

What issues could impact my ability to receive Xiocom signals?

You must be within the Xiocom service area to receive a Xiocom signal. Obstructions (buildings, foliage, etc.) and distance from tower may affect your ability to receive a signal. Typically, ¼ to ½ mile line of sight will produce a good service experience.

Do you offer technical support? What if I am having a problem connecting?

How does Xiocom’s speed compare to DSL, cable and dial-up?

Xiocom lets you connect at broadband speeds of up to 2.5 Mbps (and that’s just a sample of what we can do). Unlike DSL we offer the same upload and download speeds.
